Studying this morning's readings from the St. James Daily Devotional Guide (click to subscribe), I examined myself with these questions. Where is your self-examination leading today?
Psalms 16:1-11. Have I ever debated with myself about the reality of God? So did the Psalmist. How can he take any notice of me, small as I am? Is he really even there at all? Did I conclude as this psalm does—that he shows me the path of life—?
Job 1:1-22. Do I sometimes feel like the toy of circumstance, the subject of cruel experiments beyond my ken? Have I wondered if having a god even matters, when the one we have whimsically gives and takes away?
II Corinthians 10:1-18. Verses 3-5, what is the everyday significance, here and now, of the spiritual warfare Paul asks of us? What does winning or losing look like? What does bringing thoughts captive to Christ look like?
Luke 6:20-26. Poor and hungry, weeping and hated, ill-used by those in power just like the ancient prophets were— Jesus didn’t mean all this literally, did he? Or must I rethink what the Christian life means?
